Bed Installation Instructions
(ref.: artist drawing - shown below)
The Extendo Bed Frame Assembly will be shipped completely
assembled and can be installed as such if means are
available to handle the assembly. The same instructions
apply to the installation of the Anchor Frame, whether
it is installed separately or as a complete EXTENDO
BED assembly.
The EXTENDO BED unit consists of three main members:
the Anchor Frame (bolts to vehicle floor), the Transfer
Frame (has the rectangular tube members), and the Cargo
Frame.
See artist drawing in center of booklet.
The basic structural design and operating procedures
are common to most Extendo Bed EBL applications. However,
because of the many variances in vehicle designs, especially
in the SUV market, the actual mounting assembly will
vary for many installations. These instructions will
apply to an assembly that requires no special mounting
adapters, such as risers or special mounting brackets.
For vehicles in which these items are required, an installation
sketch and notes are added at the end of the instruction
sheet, for clarification.
To begin the installation, place the Extendo Bed unit
in the vehicle with the lock and pull handles toward
the rear.
Be certain the Extendo Bed unit
is completely closed. (In the closed position, the spring
loaded lock handle wedges securely behind the lock angle
that is welded to the right or left back corner of the
Anchor Frame). |
In this position, there will be no movement of any of
the members
of the Extendo Bed unit (see photo).
Locate the unit in the desired position, as close to the
rear of the vehicle as possible. Most units mounted in
SUV’s should have only 1/4 inch clearance between
the Extendo Bed lock handle and the back door of the vehicle.
Also check to make sure that any pre-built cargo carrier
will clear doors, & seats in the up position.
|
 |
| Before
drilling any of the holes in the floor of the vehicle,
check to verify there are no obstructions where holes
are drilled to bolt the Anchor Frame down (fuel tanks
and lines, wiring, struts, etc.). |
|
Center punch holes and drill with a 9/16" drill
bit after placing a small pilot hole. The flooring on
most SUV’s is light enough that a sharp center
punch can be driven thru the flooring for the pilot
hole. (see photo).
Use great care when drilling, particularly
around fuel tanks. |
 |
For easiest installation, place Extendo Bed in place and
drill front holes (toward front of vehicle) first. Place
the Anchor Plate under vehicle (See Photo) and insert
bolts. |
 |
The Anchor Plate (normally a 1/4” thick by 2½"
steel flat plate, approx. 14" long with ½"
nylon lock nuts welded to the under side) is placed
beneath the vehicle bed toward the front, and the bolts
are screwed in from the top. Some vehicles, more often
trucks and vans, will have a heat shield between the
vehicle bed and the exhaust pipe. These can generally
be pulled down far enough for the anchor plate to slip
between the heat shield and the underside bed of the
vehicle. |
 |
| |
 |
| |
| Some vehicles require
modified anchor plates. Due to under carriage configurations,
anchor plates may be smaller, larger or even divided into
two separate pads. |
After the back of the Extendo Bed, which is mounted
toward the front of the vehicle, is bolted down, The
Extendo Bed can be extended to give access to anchor
points that may be located below the Extendo Bed deck.
(See Photo). Again, check for any possible obstruction
below the floor before drilling holes. After the holes
are drilled, bolts are dropped through the holes and
the large ½" flat washers, lock washers,
and nuts are placed under the rear of the vehicle. Tighten
all bolts to a firm, snug fit.
|
 |
| When drilling through
the carpet or vinyl, carpet strings, or the pad below
the vinyl can sometimes get caught and wrap around the
drill bit. To prevent this, use a sharp center punch to
punch the pilot hole. Use the center punch to spread the
carpet (or vinyl) by moving in a cone-like motion. Use
a 9/16" drill bit to drill the final hole. Apply
heavy pressure at a low speed (keep a firm grip on the
drill). Use the reverse on the drill to keep the pad or
carpet strings from wrapping around the drill bit. After
the Extendo Bed is in place, tighten all anchoring bolts.
|
In vehicles with a flat floor, two TRACK GUARD ANGLES,
approximately the same length as the Extendo Bed) are
included and are attached to the floor of the vehicle
to prevent small objects from interfering with the frame
rollers. These will generally be of formed sheet metal,
aluminum, or steel angle. (See Photo) Leave a minimum
½" clear between the guard angles and the
sides of the Cargo Frame channels of the EBL in the closed
position. |
 |
This is approximately 2" from the sides of the tube
sections of the Transfer frame when extended. On the lock
angle side, place the guard angle between the lock rod
and the cargo Frame channels. (See photo). The guard angels
are attached to bed of the vehicle by #10 self tapping
screws that are included. |
 |
|
The
EXTENDO BED
assembly installation is now
complete. |
| |
NOTE: If it
is necessary to disassemble the Extendo Bed to handle
it during installation, this can be done by removing
the four Stop Angles located on the Cargo and Anchor
Frames. These stops are of 1/8" angle and are bolted
in place with 3/8" grade 8 bolts. (See photos). |

This drawing represents the newer Ford SUV's. The anchor
frame for the Explorer, Expedition, & the Expedition
EL varies in length, but is similar in features. The anchor
brackets are also different, but attaching them to the anchor
frame and to the vehicle is again similar.
The plastic trim, the recessed compartment
housing, and the third row seats, and any power seat hardware;
must be removed prior to EBL
installation.
